If this is omitted from the manuscript, the references will not be excluded. Similarly, the exclude quotes feature looks for quotation marks. If the author has not used quotation marks or missed one at the start or end of the passage, the system will not recognize it as a quote, even though it might be apparent to the editor due to its layout and reference. The default report in iThenticate is the Similarity Report. This shows you content matches from highest to lowest.
Content Tracking compares the uploaded manuscript to one source at a time. The Similarity Report combines the top matches from multiple sources into a summary, and in doing so can only attribute each match to one source when it may in fact appear in several. This is best explained using an example. Content Tracking will lay out the full extent of overlap with each source with no masking. Clicking on the link in the right-hand pane will take you to the article or web page in its original location, which can be useful for identifying website matches or checking unfamiliar sources, but only the sideby-side view will show you the matching passages next to each other.

If you participate in Similarity Check, not only do you get reduced rate access to iThenticate, but you also have the peace of mind of knowing that any similarity between your published content and manuscripts checked by other publishers will be flagged as a potential issue too. As a Similarity Check user, you also see extra features in iThenticate, such as enhanced text-matches within the Document Viewer. To participate in Similarity Check, you need to be a member.
Similarity Check subscribers allow Turnitin to index their full catalogue of current and archival published content into the iThenticate database. This means that the service is only available to members who are actively publishing DOI-assigned content and including in their metadata full-text URLs specifically for Similarity Check. Its CIS accesses our metadata daily to collect the full-text content links provided by our members within their metadata.
Turnitin follows these URLs and indexes the content found at each location. When you apply for the Similarity Check service, Turnitin will check that they can access your existing content via the full-text URLs in your Crossref metadata. You can do this in the iThenticate tool, or through your manuscript submission system using an API.

Similarity Check fees are in two parts: an annual service fee, and a per-document checking fee. Cases of suspected plagiarism are rarely limited to one journal or publisher. Software solutions, therefore, require cooperation between ideally all publishing houses. In , Crossref and the STM publishing community came together to develop Crossref Similarity Check, a service that helps editors to verify the originality of papers.
Crossref Similarity Check is powered by the Ithenticate software from iParadigms, known in the academic community as providers of Turnitin. Over CrossRef members, including Elsevier, collaborate by donating full-text journal articles and book chapters to create a unique database of over 50 million articles.
Note that even this database is not entirely exhaustive: research published by non-participating publishers or before the digital era may be absent. Elsevier's contribution consists of 10 million articles and books and is ever-increasing as all newly published articles are added.
All new submissions to many Elsevier journals are automatically screened using Crossref Similarity Check within the editorial system. Editors may also choose to run a similarity report at any other point during the review process or post-publication using the standalone tool.
To request an account, simply reach out to your Publishing contact at Elsevier. The default similarity report view gives the percentage of the text of the manuscript which has overlap with one or more published articles. Figures and equations cannot be checked at present.
